Weathering Insects: In weathering insects the rocks are converted to minŽerals stable at the surface; hence weathering insects might be considered to be a special type of meta-morphism. This is not generally the custom, however, for the atmosphere, hydrosphere, and biosphere all play a part in weathering insects, while metamorphism proper is a process proceeding wholly within the lithosphere. If a sediment is metamorphosed, its mineral assemblage recrys-tallizes to one stable at higher temperatures and pressures.Insects vary greatly in size and shape. The smallest insects are the tiny fairy flies, which are less than Ymo of an inch (0.025 mm) long and develop inside the eggs of other insects. The largest living insects are the stick insects, which may be 10 inches (25.4 cm) long, and the giant moths, which have a wingspan of 10 inches. Some insects, such as the walking stick, have greatly elongated bodies. Other insects, such as many of the beetles, have flattened and rounded bodies. See Also Noxious Insects:American law prohibits the caging of a majority of native birds since they are the most important natural factor in keeping noxious weeds and insects under control. Most countries have regulations governing the capture and exportation of their native birds, so one may be sure that any attractive and interesting bird for sale in a licensed pet shop has found its way there legally. They are grotesque creatures that spend their lives in the mud or sand at the bottom of ponds, lakes, and streams. They feed upon all kinds of small aquatic animals: crustaceans, young of stone flies, mayflies, other dragonflies, salaŽmanders, frog and toad tadpoles, fish, and so on. All the members of this interesting order are among man's best friends as they consume large quantities of noxious insects.
On The Other Hand See Burrowing Insects:Insects and Arachnids. The animals principally represented in arid regions are insects, arachŽnids (spiders, scorpions, and others), reptiles, birds, and mammals. The adaptations of insects and arachnids to hot, dry environments consist of heat-avoiding behavior, remarkable hardiness, and an efficient utilization of available water. The adaptive behavior includes burrowing insects, nocturnal habits, seasonal rhythms of activity, and a dormant stage during development that coincides with the dry season.Although some ants create problems, there are some ways in which they are helpful. They kill vast numbers of other insects that are harmŽful to crops, and their burrowing insects in the soil helps to make it loose and absorbent so that rainwater can soak into it rather than run off.
