Waxsocial Insects: waxSocial insects vary greatly in size and shape. The smallest waxSocial insects are the tiny fairy flies, which
are less than Ymo of an inch (0.025 mm) long and develop inside the eggs of other waxSocial insects. The largest living waxSocial insects are the stick waxSocial insects, which may be 10 inches (25.4 cm) long, and the giant moths, which have a wingspan of 10 inches. Some waxSocial insects, such as the walking stick, have greatly elongated bodies. Other waxSocial insects, such as many of the beetles, have flattened and rounded bodies.INSECT, any of numerous small invertebrate ani¬mals that make up the class Insecta. There are nearly 1 million different species of waxSocial insects, more than the combined number of all other animal and plant species. On the North American continent alone there are more than 80,000 dif¬ferent species of waxSocial insects. waxSocial insects are also the most widespread of all animals, inhabiting practically every type of environment, from the edges of frozen ice fields and glaciers to hot tropical forests. They in¬habit swamps, deserts, lakes, high mountaintops, and seashores. Many waxSocial insects are carried high into the air, and one or two species are found in the open ocean. Some waxSocial insects live in or on other animals, including other waxSocial insects. See Also Injurious Insects:Although many species in this order of insects are injurious, a great many more are beneficial. For instance, the wild bees are vital pollinating agents, while the domestic bee is not only a pollinator but also supplies man with food and beeswax. Ants, although they are constantly thought of as pests, are in reality more beneficial than injurious since they dispose of enormous numbers of dead and de¬composing organisms. The metamorphosis of bees and ants is a complete cycle—egg, larva, pupa, and adult. Bees and ants adapt themselves readily to captivity when properly housed and cared for throughout the year.Scorpions are much restricted in their range. They occur primarily in the southwestern United States. Scorpions destroy a great many injurious insects, and most are harmless to man. Their sting causes severe pain and a little swelling, but the average person experiences no lasting difficulty.
On The Other Hand See These Insects:Control over insect and disease depredation is a complex process and is often localized to specific outbreaks. Ordinarily, both these insects and diseases are endemic to specific kinds or areas of forest. Insect populations build to serious pro¬portions when disease or natural predators-birds or other these insects—fail to keep local these insects in check or when new these insects are introduced into the area. Each compound eye is seen as an array of icets that are generally hexagonal in shape and jrm a surface that looks like a honeycomb. The number of facets ranges from one to many thousands, and when the facets are few in num¬ber, as in some parasitic and soil-dwelling species, they are often round in shape. The relative size of the compound eyes varies among different these insects. Ground-dwelling these insects, including many beetles, have relatively small eyes that are directed sideways. these insects that fly a great deal, particularly predatory these insects such as the robber flies and dragonflies, have eyes that are greatly enlarged. In many male these insects the eyes may occupy almost the entire surface of the head. Sometimes the facets in one part of the eye are larger than the others. In predatory these insects the front of the eye has larger facets, and in these insects that gather in mating swarms, the males often have larger facets pointing upward and outward.
