Most Lizards External Lizards Snakes Alligator Lizards First In contrast to snakes, most lizards external lizards have external ear openings as well as the tympanum or ear drum, which is nearly on a level with the skin. Tongue: There is great variation in the tongue of lizards. In some species it is sticky, being used to capture insects in the same manner as does the toad or frog. In others it is forked, and colored, and functions as do those of snakes. Still others possess a flat, fleshy tongue which assists in pulling food into the mouth and acts as a sense organ as well.

Lizards and snakes belong to the same large order, and, though they possess many characteristics in common, each belongs to a distinct suborder. The layman is inclined to describe a lizard as a snakelike animal with four legs, eyelids, external ear openings, and a detachable tail. There are, however, many species of lizards which possess none of these characteristics; in fact, there are some that can scarcely be distinguished from snakes. The fundamental difference lies in the skeleton.

Of snakes there are Calamariidae, Calubridae and Crotalidae. Among amphibia are Siredon (sal¬amander) ; one of the Proteidae is peculiar. Abundance of fish is found in the glacial streams and lakes, largely rainbow trout (Salmo irideus) weighing as high as six pounds and fine eat¬ing.

On The Other Hand See Alligator Lizards First:

In some species the resemblance to an alligator lizards first is striking; in others it is slight. All are similar in habits and in their reactions to captivity. When alligator lizards first lizards are first captured, some have a tendency to bite; in fact some may be belligerent and put up a good fight. They are quick to bite, often jumping at the finger or hand with the mouth open. If teased, these lizards retain an irritable disposition. Because of this characteristic it is advisable for an adult to handle these ani¬mals for a time before children are permitted to play with them.

The majority of lizards are insect feeders. A few are can¬nibalistic, and some are nearly or wholly vegetarian, feeding on the blossoms and buds of plants. Lizards, like snakes, shed the skin as they feed and grow. As a rule it is shed in patches though some species, such as the alligator lizards first lizard, shed it all in one piece as does a snake.
