Lizards: Housing: A great many lizards make interesting pets which become very tame and soon learn to take food from one's fingers. Most lizards are easily maintained in the woodland or desert habitat of the terrarium. As a rule several kinds of lizards may be placed in the habitat together. However, some species are cannibalistic and must be housed alone.
The body of a lizard is covered with scales, but the scales are not covered by a. delicate skin as they are in the snake. This gives many lizards a rough, spiny, or prickly feeling to the touch. The colors in the scales combine to form definite patterns or markings on the body of lizards. Lizards are cold-blooded creatures, hence feel cold to the touch.
Eyes: The majority of lizards in the United States have functional eyes with movable eyelids. The two exceptions are the geckos, which are night wanderers, and the rather rare xantusias or night lizards. |
